"Know what the butcher said when he backed into the meat grinder?”
The question, booming through the early-morning darkness of the bedroom, wrenched me from deep sleep.
“No! What did the butcher say when he backed into the meat grinder?”
“He said, ‘I’m getting a little behind in my work!’”
The huge voices from the radio exploded in laughter that bellowed and rolled and filled the world. I lurched upright, remembering why I should be awake at that moment. I saw my brothers and sister lay there in bed, some of them had a twist of their body and then, sleeps back again. They were very tired and sleeping sound to have notice of the insane laughter of the radiomen. The clock showed that it was 2:30. In the morning! “I am not supposed to get up at all if I don’t want to,” I thought, “but I have important things to do.”
I got up and quietly step out of the room. I climbed down the stairs and saw that nobody, even my mother who used to wake up early, was awake. I didn’t bother wake her up to have her accompany me downstairs because I want to be alone. I turned on the lights, got my bag and emptied it. I laid my books on the table and began exercising (yes, I do this, to keep me awake).
It was a very wonderful start because I didn’t feel dizzy. I got my Biology book and tried to scan the pages. I read what are the things wrote there. It was 3:00. for me, the time seems to be running so fast and yet, I have not gone into the climax of my study. I was beginning to feel dizzy already. I laid down my head.
I got up and saw the clock that says it was 3:45. I sighed. I felt that it was the end of the world. I suddenly heard a yawn from above me. I saw my mother climbing down the stairs. She asked me what I am gotten for in that time of the day. I told her that I was up early so that I can study my lessons because it was an examination day. She was worried about my health because 2:30 is too early for me. She reached for a glass of milk and has me drink it.
It was already four o’clock. The morning was now filled with different noises of morning creatures. The sound of the morning bell of the chapel’s belfry was like a festival of gongs. As I concentrated my eyes on the window, I saw birds flying above, hoping from trees to trees, branches to branches. I will completely be carried away by my emotions and forget the time passing by if not for my mother who waked me up from my sentiments. It was already 4:15.
I focused all my attentions now on my book. Even though I have not memorized all things that have to and have not read the whole chapter, I have to stop and pack all my things up back to my bag because the clock says that it was already 5:05. I lazily put my things in order. In mind, I have this thought, ‘Oh,my! What am I going to do? I wasted my time and for sure, I will become thinner because I have been sleeping late and waking up so early.’ And as the last piece of book was in my hands, I let go of it, I let it fall to the ground. I lost hope.
It was like a strong gust of wind when my mother yelled at me that startled me. I picked up the book and got ready to go to school. When I was done, I went directly to school.
I was shocked with what I saw---all the people were all happy, so merry, and so glad. Why? The teacher told them that there will be no exam. I wished it was true. And…. and it was TRUE!

THE BOOK ALMOST NOBODY READS
Yet no other book tells us so much about ourselves- about who we are
And where we are going
Have you read the latest Harry Potter book? Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol?
What kind of book do you like to read? Is it a romantic novel? Comedy? Or just a simple and boring book?
Like the plays of Shakespeare, the dialogues of Plato, and a forum about the current political issues, the Bible is a sore spot on many people. You are bothered with your conscience because you feel you ought to have read it. There are, of course, all sorts of reasons why you haven’t. For one thing, there is this very sleepy format that on one glance you say, “Can I have this book and tear the pages? Because it’s very dull.” The binding is likely to be extremely dreadful. Then, there are these passages that even Moses must have nodded over. There are also those unfamiliar names of different kinds which are more difficult to pronounce than tongue-twisters.
And there are other reasons. One of them is that the Bible not only looks awfully dull, but some of it is. Some of the oldest Bibles are most likely to be made with very old and unstylish hands. Just tear one page of it and you will have many reasons to say to your mother to have it discarded. There is so little laughter in the Bible. You can never read a single word expressing happiness except for happy, tears of joy, hope fulfilled.
In short, one way to describe the Bible would be to say that it is a disorderly collection of 60-odd books which are often tedious, obscure, barbaric and teeming with contradictions and inconsistencies. It is like a mountain of compost of rotten apples and vegetables, dog left-over, vomited and spoiled foods.
And yet…..
And yet just because it is a book about the sublime and unspeakable, it is a book about life, about how all these things started. It is about people who at once believed and doubted, accused and blamed, hoped and failed. In other words, it is book about us. And it is also a book about God. But the story we find in the Bible is not God’s story but it is ours, our very own story. It is only God’s interactions with us.
But we find something in it also. Behind those dull pages, we discover many things and find the answer to your questions. Reading the Bible is like looking out the window and seeing all the people on the street gazing up into the sky toward something which is hidden from us by the roof. They are pointing up. They are speaking strange words. They are very excited. Something’s happening that we can’t see. Something beyond our comprehension has caught them all up. To read the words in the Bible is to try to read the expressions on their faces. To listen to the words of the Bible is to try to catch the queer sounds they are making. Therefore, the Bible is a dictionary, a book for the unspeakable, slaves and harassed.
There are people who read the Bible only for the sake of others or because their friends or relatives told them to do so. There are also people who say you should read the Bible as literature because of stories it tells and the history it contains. Some people might only se the Bible as unreadable but this is the Word of God which speaks out the depths of an almost unimaginable past into the deepest place of our own hearts.

FUNNY BUSINESS
In this unjust and troublesome world, there is still a piece of laughter in our hearts. Even in times of uncertainties and difficulties, when you feel your heart became heavier than before, you laugh. Laughter matters most. The only answer in this world’s peace crisis is to laugh. According to most of us, ‘Laughter is the best medicine’. Among those funny business to fall victim in to my desk are these three:
Have I Ever Called You Name
There are so many different names of people nowadays because of the increasing population that one is hard put to remember the names of his or her classmates and teachers.
Even the name of this game me and my friend created, we do not know. But anyway, we will just call it a ‘name game’. Do you have an idea of what I’m talking about? No? well then, here’s a sample conversation we had for the past few days:
“Err… Excuse me, Mary Jale. What is ----?”
“Aha! You just called my name a while ago and then now you’re repeating it. You are supposed to call my middle name and its Tuesday! Give me my one peso!”
“Alas! I took no notice of it. I am very busy with something here and then, grr… Here, take this one peso of yours.”
Ring a bell yet? Well, we have a deal that every Tuesday and Thursday in the month of March, we will call each other by our middle names. And if someone says the real name instead of the required twice within those days, she will have to pay one peso. This is somewhat confusing and mind-boggling yet a very funny business.
Nobody knows this game except for the, wait, let me count first…. Ah, yes! Except for the six of us. I don’t think also someone had played this game before us. This is not good for us though because this is gambling, this involves money but this is only a game which we had agreed, no personalizing.
What’s that again?
“A midpoint is a point that divides a segment (sig-ment) into two congruent segments.”
-Grechelle-
“Speaking (spe-king) of the devil, the devil is here.”
-Mary Jale-
“What”s that anime again? Prince of Tennis (ti-nis)?”
-Gilphanie-
“What’s that? Pith? Death (dith)!”
-Brigitte-
“He partitioned Bengal into two provinces to facilitate administration of the region and to weaken (we-ken)….”
-Yours Truly-
Tired of figuring out what are with these double-quoted sentences? Well, the underlined words are words mispronounced by us and the words enclosed in the parentheses are there respective pronunciation based on how they are said.
Every time we recall these words, we laugh and keep on repeating it. But aside from these words there are still many words we mispronounced such as ‘gren’ instead of green and ‘rid’ instead of red, ‘ridy’ instead of ready and ‘mital instead of metal.’
This one’s of another kind. This comes from Reader’s Digest 1975 issue:
Smashed Potatoes:
A kid’s eye view of the kitchen
ICEPOPS FOR SUMMER
1 whole can of any kind of drink except for beer
11 or 9 sticks maybe
Regular frigerator silver things that turns ice into cubes
THAT’S ALL
Shake up the juice for some hours. Be sure to put the sticks in upside down, else you won’t have no handles, and maybe you could never get the ice pops out.
Now it has to freeze good – or – oh boy! – When you open it, it will spill all over and the floor gets all sticky and bad ants.
Usually it takes till lunch time, but not always.

WITHIN THAT HOUSE
“Daddy, let’s go shopping! I want to buy new clothes,” demanded the youngster.
“Honey, just ask your mom. I have some work to finish here,” complained her aging father.
“I’m sorry baby, maybe later, tomorrow, or any other time. Not now, I have many other things to do, plus, there’s your baby sister. Would you please tend the baby for a while, dear?” said her mother.
Well, what would the youngster do? Obviously, she would baby sit her younger sister without any complains to her mother or father.
This is but one of many conversations among family members; an image of a family whether you say that it is a good or a bad example of family. One’s family has to be supportive to every member, in good times or in difficulties. Well, a family is composed of a mother, a father, and son(s) or daughter(s). Each one in the family has something to do for the good of their household. Each on has his or her own duty and responsibility.
A family is group of individuals living under on roof and under one head. To some of us, the common head of the family is our father. Fathers are said to have the biggest duty and the one bearing the entire burden. As a head, he serves as the family’s foundation. He is the one protesting his wife and children. He bears the entire burden because during storms, he’s the one defending the family. He provides the daily viand. He is also the one working for the family to have enough money to sustain their need. Without him, like any other men, you hadn’t been there reading this entry of mine and I had not written this.
A house being a mansion will not be called a mansion without its lights turn on. Like a mansion, a family must have a light which guides you even through pit holes; a light which enlightens you with your problems; and the light which encourages you to contend obstacles you encounter. A light that will long last even if it is heavily rained during storms and a light having the highest voltage among all lights. A family’s light must be the brightest, brighter than thousands of lighted bulbs; the most beautiful; the most expensive-------and that is the mother, the goddess of the family. When father brings the food, mother is the one tasked to cook it. When father produces money, mother will be the one to budget it for the family. Thereby, father and mother are real partners in life. See? Even in making us they are partners!
A family will not be called a family even if it has a father and a mother. And a parent will not be called a parent if it has no young, whether it is a girl or a boy. If fathers are the foundations and the mothers are the lights, then the children are the appliances and the things inside each house. Children are the luckiest members of the family. Why? Because children are protected, supported and loved by their parents. But they do also have tasks to accomplish. Parents are fortunate with their children because they are their hopes. Their children are their angels. They are the one who will bring them to wealth and to good fortune.
Some families, I guess, aren’t just the same with this kind of family. But it is a nice feeling for you having a family to lean on in times of trouble because it has been said that your family is your number one best friend.

1 girl + 6 boys = total chaos (Ouran High School Host Club Intro)
Being with a rich guy or gal doesn’t literally mean being connected to him or her all throughout. Most of our teenagers now marry not because of what he or she feels toward the person but because of wealth and popularity. But what’s weightier, what matters the most, the inside or the outside?
There is this anime which tells us the true meaning of love. It is entitled ‘Ouran High School Host Club’. Such a lengthy title? Yes, but this is a very admirable anime. Let’s forget about the conflict between animes and Filipino movies which I mentioned in my article ‘@nime-club.com’, just bare with me as I recall what I have seen.
The story begins with an eager-to-investigate Fujioka Haruhi entering Ouran High School music room. She was astonished and at the same time wondered with what she saw—a group of boys with their charm, beauty and gentleness. This group is called the ‘Ouran High School Host Club’. As to what their group name sounds, they are hosts; they receives and entertain guests especially girls and bring joy to them. By the way, Ouran High School is a prestigious school exclusively for the wealthy people except for Haruhi. Fujioka Haruhi’s a special student, meaning she passed the examination for scholar and take note, this scholarship is solely for her. What an opportunity! Anyways, Ouran Host Club is defined as, (1) prestigious family and (2) wealth. Then, this disaster came to her life: she had just accidentally broken a vase worth 80,000,000 yen. This, in condition, they appointed her as their dog (aw! aw!). Here the story of this poor maiden with the host club begins.
Haruhi had been in pretty much troubled because she owed them 80 million yen and encountered the wealthiest students in Ouran High School : Tamaki Souh (prince type), Kyuoya Ootori (cool type), Morinozuka Takashi (wild type), Mitsukuni Huninuzuka (loli-shota type) and the Hitachiin brothers, Hikaru and Kaoru (little devil type). The host club except for Kyuoya did not at first notice Haruhi as a girl but as boy because of her ragged outfit and boyish looks. But when they got her eyeglasses, *ting*!!! Tamaki’s hundreds of bulbs turned on, one by one. What’s the meaning of that?!? Something’s fishy!
In the first season, Tamaki wasn’t sure of his feelings toward Haruhi. But Hikaru is so sure! Hikaru is falling in love with Haruhi. He and Haruhi once had a date. But wait a minute, Haruhi seems to be unaffected. Is she numb? Or does only mean Haruhi’s love is not Hikaru? If yes, for whom? Tamaki is just an idiot, a very dull person. He calls Haruhi his daughter but at the same time gets insecure when he sees Haruhi with other boys and then, he’s not sure with his feelings? What a very confusing story!
You know, for us who have seen the anime have this conclusion: ‘Tamaki is falling in love with Haruhi and vice versa’. But this is only ours. This anime is simply amazing. If you have the chance, then please watch it because you will not be disappointed. I guarantee it's unbelievable!

DISHEARTENED NIRVANA FRUITS......
Endearing voices, tickling creams and worry-free laughter…………
These are non-faded nature of our youngsters. We dub them earthly angels who flap their tiny wings in the aerial of freedom and bliss. Heaven kisses their foreheads and relish with them. They are our guardian angels, sent from heaven to continue what is good and to diminish what is bad. Aren’t they awe-inspiring?
Regrettably, this word is not a paradise yet, it is a very pitiful sight. The public does not seem to notice the petite ones in every corner of the world. Who reaches out for them? Who heeds their summons?
Populace usually looks into a vast field to feed vigorous, hungry for flesh lions than in derelict domicile where skinny cows live. Just think about this: the lions are fed with flesh while the cows are hardy fed with grass. Unmindful of the prevailing truth of dearth, lions’ share of the nation are becoming more selfish and strives even more to get to the peak of the mountain. Unconsciously or deliberately, those who are at the foot of the mountain, and those who are fed with grasses are pushed down harder, reaching the roots beneath. Who are affected the most? Who suffers a lot?
The innocent and bland little children………..
They are expected to enjoy the sweetness of childhood years. But are they?
Indeed, associations are established to take note of our seraphs, especially those who are strayed; homeless and abused. Heaps of young people were helped and guided back to good senses.
On the contrary, only those reported kids were lent a hand. How about those children at concealed areas? Disregarded sites? Openly in the streets, we could see youngsters wandering and are mucky. Moreover, a large amount of the street children had become drug addicts, thieves and even young criminals. Because of poverty, majority of them are uneducated and early marriages are at stake, also, ignorance filled them. They are from civilization; they do not even have rag dolls. They are contented on what they have and easily appreciate small things. Most of them are malnourished; they are whom you see whenever you pa a bridge, having big tummies yet very thin hands and legs. They wander on streets naked and so disgusting. These angels breathe polluted air and eat innutritious food; sometimes the leftovers they found on streets or in garbage. They promote low self-esteem and poor personality. Can we still win them back? How?
Juvenile citizens are nurtured and respected, not ignored!
Children must be cared, understood and most of all loved by the society, by the world and by it’s people. They must have good education so that they can stand out and speak out to the selfish lions their rights, that they are equal in everything, same rights, and same dignity. Providing them good shelter, sending them on to good schools and teaching them the values of being a good citizen are the things they most likely need. Let us value them and stretch out our concern for our dismayed cherubs in dimmed and hidden corners………

@nime-club.com (Part 2)
Maybe you just don't know it but the anime you hated may actually be part of the curriculum of a literature class in college. Even Dragonball and Monkey Magic can actually give you an insight into literature. Both of these programs have characters based on a monkey, a charcter in a story by Wu Cheng-en based on the ancient Chinese legend 'Journey to the West', which traces the origins of Buddhism. It follows the adventures of Tripitak his disciples and Monkey, on their journey from China to India on a holy pilgrimage with many dangers. Some sources even point to this Monkey as the origin of the phrase 'Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil.'
Anyway, when I was a lot younger, I have seen many anime and one of these is Ghost Fighter (you should be able to know this, if not shame on you!). Even though I have seen many anime, more animated and updated, but I consider this as the bes anime because it has all; the combination of romance, action and comedy especially that love in this anime is not purely girl and boy relationship but also love of brother to his sister. Remember, Vincent having a sister named Mika-ela whom he loved so much? This is such a wonderful anime, a reason why this anime is shown over and over again on T.V.
I have also seen animes based on high school life such as 'To heart', 'Sailormoon','Fruits Basket' and 'Ouran High school'. Ah, yes! Who could have forgotten the very popular 'Slam Dunk' with Hanamichi Sakuragi's love for basketball and for Haruko Takenori, the love of his life and of Kaede Rukawa calling him stupid. Imagining a boy who has an all time record of being dumped by fifty times by various girls during junior high, you can conclude that this boy's a gangsta or just plainly a very-hard-to-love guy but you know, when I saw the anime, I was impressed with his hardships in getting Haruko's attention. This anime is Hanamichi's tale of basketball, love triangles, hardships, topsy-turvy life, blood, sweat and some tears. This anime is simply amazing. If you have the chance, then please watch it because you will not be disappointed. I guarantee it's 'unberibaburya' (unbelievable)! You could have loved 'Slam Dunk' if you have seen it because even if Hanamichi's a very-hard-to-love guy, the story is just of another type, a very-easy-to-love anime. Speaking of slam dunk, rebounding and dunking are Hanamichi's specialties.
But that's not all, there's more! There are animes for detectives also like 'Detective Conan', a story of a small boy that turns out to be the best detective ever. There are also religious animes that I've seen and one of these is 'Chrono Crusade'. Are you familiar with 'Mary and the secret garden'? Well, a certain anime company has produced a series of anime, all of which are based on works on children literature. Most of them are being shown on Philippine T.V.s (and you thought all anime are mindless, think again!). Here are some of them: Anne of Green Gables, A dog of Flanders, Heidi, the alps girl and Tom Sawyer. For sure, you have one of these just even once or are you just a fan of Barbie, Bratz, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty?

ALL WE NEED IS LOVE!
One day, I met a small boy trudging along, carrying his younger brother on his back. Seeing the boy's burden almost as big as himself, I asked if it was too much for him. The boy replied in all childish sincerity, "Oh, he's not heavy; he's my brother."
Upon hearing his answer, I, stunned and moved, suddenly remember my sister. In all my childhood years, I never experienced being carried by her. But that was long ago and that did not hinder our relationship. I forgive her already and until now, we're friends although sometimes, when she asked something, she made no reply. I love her, I care for her and I know that she loves me in return.
Most of us are a few years older than this boy, but we can learn a wonderful lesson from him. His small sacrifice for his younger brother has an important message. It shows the one thing that this world badly needs; the one thing that can solve our problems; the one thing everyone talks about but almost no one really gives---and that is love.
Love makes all things possible, solves our problems whether it is big or small, and sweetens every sacrifice. Love is te greatest commandment, the greatest miracle-worker of all time.
Without love, God wouldn't have created the world and all the people on it. Without love, you wouldn't have ben born; people will work individually; there will be no progress. We must put all love not in our brain but in our heart. We must give love not only because of your own good but for the good of your people. We must think love, give love, even put love where there is no love!
Is it very hard to obey your parents? Lend a helping hand? It isn't if we do it with love. Love can do the impossible we say, so why not try it? Trying it will yes, make a great change but it is not the disaster you were thinking of yet, it is the most wonderful thing to happen. It has been said that the hardest thing to for us to give is to "give in". But love can do it. Let us put our pride aside and be the first one to say "I'm sorry". Is it very hard to say that two-word phrase to the person you hurt? It isn't if it is true, if it is from your heart. Love melts pride.
Love makes sacrifices sweet! When someone is sick at home, he needs us more than ever. Let us put aside every other thing and have time for him. It is time consuming, yes, but by doing this, you can show how you love a person. You may not notice it but for every care you give to him, you feel great and satisfied. Why? Love is the answer. See? It is no trouble when we do it with love.
All we need is love because love is the only thing that can change the world, you and your interaction with others. And only when men realize this, will we have a real and a just peace.
